From Il Pellicano you can follow a trail up Monte Argentario’s hillside aromatic with myrtle, heather, juniper and rosemary.

Ten minutes away is Porto Ercole, Caravaggio’s final resting place. He sailed from Palo Laziale, home of sister hotel La Posta Vecchia to seek a papal pardon, but was struck down by a mysterious ailment and spent his last days here. Sip an aperitivo absorbing the glamorous vibe of the modern port town, watching the yacht masts sway along the pontoons, or stay after dusk and sample the chichi dining and high paced nightlife.

Santo Stefano is Monte Argentario’s largest port town and more down to earth with its working rhythm. There are spectacular views from the 17th century Spanish fortress.

Orbetello has a busy local life, it is reached by one of the three spits of land that create the two lagoons decoratively inhabited by pink flamingos and white herons. There are also two rather beautiful stretches of sandy beach, Giannella and most particularly Feniglia.
